    This is the best kept secret in La Crosse and by far the best place for vegans and vegetarians in the area. My son and I ate here over the weekend and split the walnut burger as well as the sweet potato, black bean hash. It was all delicious!! They have many vegetarian options but also meals for meat eaters as well. Located above the organic, healthy food co-op. You would never know its there. The service was also excellent.

    Given the lack of vegan options in La Crosse, I was pleased to find Hackberry's. Located on the top floor of the People's Food Co-op, Hackberry's is an elegant, classy dining spot with a small bar area as well. The restaurant overlooks a park and has great atmosphere. I had their house veggie burger ($8) which was a patty made of mushrooms, zucchini, carrots and other good stuff. It was definitely tasty and nicely priced; it also came with an unusual, cool wild rice salad with nuts and figs. My only suggestion is that the veggie burger could have been a bit more moist (adding some slices of avocado could have helped) and the patty could have used some red pepper to give it a spicy kick. Hackberry's also offers a vegetable stir-fry (with the option for seitan), a couple of unusual veganizable sandwiches (such as an apple sandwich), risotto, and salads. Unfortunately, they don't have any vegan desserts. Lunch prices are reasonable in the $7-10 range, but dinner prices nearly double to the $15+ range, so keep this in mind if you're on a budget.

    My friend and I went to the restaurant this afternoon. We were seated about the same time as two other tables and it also seemed that they were expecting a rather large table, except there were no patrons for said table anywhere to be seen at the moment. My friend and I debated over the menu. We had plenty of time to look it over, as it seems there was only one waitress and a hostess that kinda seemed to be serving as well. When the waitress finally came over, we both decided on the ciabatta, she, choosing the rice salad side, and I, choosing the fish chowder side. We didn't see a clear price for the drinks. She and I both also ordered a mocha. The little drink list they placed on the table showed the mocha was $5, however, later we were charged $4 each. No real complaint there, except for inconsistent pricing. The large table of eight started to trickle in. We sat and talked for a bit before our coffees had come to the table, both enjoying our drinks and talking about what we had to do. Then the rest of the group showed up and sat down. I had noticed, while we sat there, sipping our liquid energy and talking of shopping and future events, the waitress had taken the orders of the large table beside us. She and I successfully finished our coffees as we waited. And waited. I noticed the large table beside us had been served while we were partially in our ignorant, caffeine-induced bliss. My friend excused herself to used the powder room, then came back. I could tell she wanted to say something. I KNOW I wanted to say something. We held on a couple more minutes as we waited. Finally the sandwiches came. The sandwiches were served open-faced to see the contents: A chicken breast, grilled with roasted red peppers, baby arugula, swiss cheese, pancetta and an "aioli". For those not aware: aioli actually means a sauce made of garlic and olive oil and can sometimes include mustard or, in some areas of Italy, pear. Aioli is SIMILAR to mayonnaise, as it is an emulsion, but they are not the same and as such, if you're going to run a restaurant targeting vegans/vegetarians, do not use the term aioli incorrectly. That all being said, I had a sneaking suspicion it would just be a house mayo. When my counterpart requested an extra side of it, the waitress looked at her crossly and stated, "Well, there's some on there already." Yes... we knew that. The girl loves her mayo. Bring the woman mayo. She trekked back to the kitchen. I decided to wait for the extra mayo as well (if we're getting some anyway, why not wait?) and sampled my soup. Mmm! I don't normally care for soup, but I liked the choice far over the other options. Lots of ham chunks, fish, red potatoes, and other mirepoix veggies contained within a light cream base. I had taken one or two bites when I noticed she had not been eating. It was then that I also realized neither one of us had napkins or silverware, save for the fact my soup required a soup spoon, which they brought with the dish. When the mayo came back to the table, we politely asked for silverware. She ran off again to procure the requested equipment for the job as well as get us more water. The hostess was the one to actually return with our items and we settled into the meal. One to two bites into the sandwich, the waitress came over to see if we liked the food. I think it was a little too soon to check after everything considering, but appreciated, nonetheless. The flavors of the sandwich were delightful. The one thing I would suggest is slice the chicken breast after cooking but before adding the cheese. It was hard to get decent bites (also, the pancetta looked a tad burnt). I tried her rice salad. Mild, a bit of tooth to the cold grain dish, but otherwise okay. She seemed to enjoy my soup and we carried on about our conversation while consuming our lunch. Meanwhile, the large party beside us had packed up the troupe and left. So let's think about this: We came in before the large party of eight. We ordered before the large party of eight. They had their orders taken after us, and had their food before we had ours. Something doesn't make sense. As we finished our plates, the waitress asked if we wanted anything else. That's when my friend suggested the "Chef's Choice": a parfait consisting of coffee whipped cream, chocolate cake & hazelnut/coffee mousse. By far, the best part of the meal. I could have eaten that dense mousse all day long. All-in-all, while the food was okay, things seemed unpolished, our food took far too long (which showed) and the room was under-staffed for the day. If I ever go back, make sure that dessert is still there. I'll take that and a mocha. At least then I can get out of the restaurant in under two hours. In fact, maybe next time we'll just do the deli down in the co-op instead.

    oh hackberrys...... I want to like you so much..... but, you need work. I love the Co-op and I think that Hackberry's could be a very successful piece of it. They need to do some revamping. They should have a seasonal menu. Maybe change it at least 3 times a year. The menu needs to be interesting and full of fresh ingredients. There also needs to be some food quality control. The soups are super awesome. I have literally never had a bad soup at the Co-op/Hackberrys. They serve the same soup in Hackberry's as they do at the deli. Whoever is making it, does a fantastic job. That is always a safe bet on the menu. I don't know what else to say. .

    Disappointing. Oh, I wish that I would have had a pleasant time here- or even an alright time. Problem 1: The order When it was time to place the order, I asked the waitress what she would suggest that was vegan and without mushrooms. I was directed towards the veggie burger. "But doesn't that have mushrooms in it?" "Yah, but they're chopped up." "Okay, I'll have the walnut burger." "For your side, would you like the Chicken [risotto]*, mushroom bisque,or wild rice salad?" "the rice" *I think #2 The drink. My friend ordered their Bloody Mary, from now on it will be refered to as just a BM. This concoction was one of the worst drinks that I have tasted. I don't think I could have made one this bad if I was trying. There was no flavoring that resembled a Bloody Mary- the closest that I can describe is a rotten onion that has been sitting in a tin can. #3 The Food The walnut burger was missing the lettuce and tomato (just noticed this when I checked the menu to write this review). It was completely dry and had no flavor or texture. But it did come with a side of pesto-mayo- what's vegan about that? #4 The Bill I left to have my wife pay. She ended up going up to the counter because that seemed like it was the only way to get out of there. The waitress asked how the BM was. My wife, who also tasted it, told her. She said that was weird because they had the best in town. She got the mix and let my wife taste it, and I guess it seemed alright. The waitress then said that she'd never had one before. So, what did they serve? There was no offer to refund the $6 BM, but I was glad just to be out of there. #5 Décor Do you remember the Kmart cafeteria? Oh, the rice salad was nice. Get it to go.

    Hackberries used to be an awesome place. Mother's Day breakfast was way over priced. For $25/head expected a lot more. Like warm sausages!

    We stopped at Hackberry's this past weekend. We choose Hackberry's because of its commitment to local and organic foods. Sadly, we ran into the same service issues that have been referenced in other reviews. It took more than 35 minutes to receive our food after our order. It was a typical breakfast style order - eggs, pancakes, ... By the time the food arrived we had very little time to eat since we had to get to another event. While we waited, no one checked in on the delay. I asked the hostess what was going on and never got an answer. Will need to find a new place going forward - the delays in service were unacceptable.

    When we first moved into town we went to Hackberry's on a monthly basis. At that time it was under the culinary guide of Chef Stacy who did a fantastic job of delivering delicious dishes. They used to have wine and food tours which we very much enjoyed. 6 years later the menu is still the same and the food is lack luster. As always it seems like they have too few servers. I really want Hackberry's to succeed but they need to add a little life back into their menu and atmosphere.

    This was one of the best breakfasts that I have had in a long time. I was shocked because I'm not really a health food guy and certainly not a vegetarian or vegan. I had the hash breakfast, which at 10 bucks was about the most expensive thing on the menu. Most items were closer to $7. It was chopped potatoes with pork shoulder, red peppers, avocado, and it looked like some pumpkin chunks as well and a very flavorful sauce. It came with poached eggs on top and toast. Lorae had some phenomenal pancakes, with huge chunks of pumpkin mixed in and pecans on top. I will come here for breakfast every time that I'm in La Crosse.

    We went for Mother's Day brunch; very disappointing. The sausages were cooked but NOT even warm. The sweet potato hash was so undercooked that the sweet potatoes were crunchy! (I usually like that dish on the regular menu; however this was a buffet.) No hash browns or their roasted potatoes; egg strata was only okay--very bland. French toast sticks with strawberry sauce was also lacking in...something. Scones and muffins were good but when the buffet is $25 a person, you kind of expect something much, much better.

    This place is above the food co-op. It serves mostly, if not all, organic food. The service was great as well as the food. They have a nice sized menu and daily specials as well as a kids' menu. Soups, salads, sandwiches, hot dishes, etc. . . They have meals for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. My sister loves their walnut burger and despite being a meat eater I'd recommend the stir fried veggies with brown rice.

    Delicious, healthy breakfast with many options. As a vegetarian, I often have easy choices with few menu items to choose from. Hackberrys had tons of great options. I had a delicious scramble. Others enjoyed pancakes and the sweet potato mash. Coffee and service were good as well. Conveniently above the natural foods store if you need to pick anything up.

    It's hard to express how disappointed I am with my experience at Hackberry's. Let me just say that as a vegetarian and a supporter of the local foods movement, I am happy that we have the Co-op here in La Crosse. Unfortunately, their restaurant has been on the decline since the day it opened. I went to Hackberry's with a party of six. There were a couple other tables being used, but most were empty. We placed our orders with a waitress who was a bit aloof, but not necessarily unfriendly. We ended up waiting about 40 minutes for our food; incredible given the fact that the place was rather empty and this was only "breakfast food." When the food did arrive, it was really nothing special. Hackberry's advertises "brunch," but I found it more akin to breakfast and grill food. Sure, there were some vegetarian options like seitan in place of some meat options, but how hard is it to throw in some seitan when scrambling eggs? All the options that had a rather unique looking ingredient really only used it as a garnish. The dish advertised with avocado comes to mind; it arrived with only two very small slices. What's worse is the fact that half of our dishes arrived cold. I don't think I really need to drive home the idea that cold poached eggs are not very appetizing. To their credit, when one of us mentioned this, a woman who seemed to be a manager insisted on redoing the whole dish - but we weren't about to ask them to redo the entire cold half of our order. The beer cheese soup seemed to be the only remnant of the old Hackberry's I used to love. It was well seasoned and balanced, but couldn't make up for the rest of the issues. When they first opened for dinner, their dishes used to be elegant, unique, and centered around the vegetarian/local idea. They were, of course, losing money with the way they managed the restaurant and that triggered them to cut out dinner and, apparently, opt for the short-order menu. If Hackberry's losses weren't subsided by the profitable Co-op downstairs, its doors would have closed long ago. I certainly hope they're able to turn themselves around!

    A great restaurant that uses some organic ingredients with vegan and vegetarian options, which is hard to find in the La Crosse area. We like the new hours and dinner menu. Started with the polenta cakes appetizer, which was very tasty. My wife had the Hackberry's hash with pork -- very good -- and I had possibly one of the best burgers I have had, other than my own, of course.

    Hackberry's struggled to overcome a rough start a few years ago when the serivce was perhaps the worst I've ever experienced in a restaurant. They've improved dramatically and in recent visits we've had very good food and pretty good service. I've never had surly staff, just untrained and awkward staff. Brunch dishes, especially the seasonal pancakes, are excellent. Dinners have all been very good , however we have often been told they are out of the menu items we tried to order. The dinner salad is a knock out. Good wine selection. Menus change seasonally so it's hard to recommend something that might not be there later, though the walleye and garlic mashed potatoes and the mushroom risotto were my recent favorites. All that being said, Hackberry's is the place we take guests, especially vegetarian guests. They make a real effort to serve sustainable, local and often organic food. The dining room offers cool, clean design with beautiful views of the park across the street.

    I want to love Hackberry's. I really really do. But Hackberry's is only putting forth a C effort, when it could be an "A." But it might not be their fault. Hackberry's is a sit-down restaurant upstairs from LaCrosse's only co-op grocery store, The People's Co-Op. LaCrosse (my hometown), is not a bastion of quality, tongue-tickling cuisine. It's filled with chain restaurants, and nondescript fare. People here love their meat and potatoes and sauces. I understand this. Until I went to college I only ate hamburgers and fries. But then I lived in San Francisco, and my tastebuds exploded. Healthy/interesting food cares more about quality ingredients, and juxtaposition of flavors and textures. Hackberry's tries. they really do. The dishes I've had here try to be adventurous, but end up falling short. Maybe because the diners arent' demanding, (they don't know any better), Hackberry's hasn't needed to step up. Some examples: I ordered a quiche made with wild rice and peppers and fontina cheese. Sounds good - but there was so much wild rice it dominated the flavor and the texture, and made the quiche too chewy, not tender as a quiche is supposed to be. My mom ordered the tabbouli as a side dish (well, I made her), and while traditional tabbouli is made with bulgur wheat, they made it with wheat berries. Now I have no problem with a restaurant riffing on a dish, but they didn't make it interesting, they made it into more of a boring veggie salad with tomato and cucumber than the grain-based dish it is supposed to be.
